Illinois Boys State is a seven-day hands-on experience in the operation and fundamentals of government.
The program draws together the best and brightest high school students – during the summer before their senior year – to help lead them down the path of individual success and leadership through doing, not just learning.
From among the 1.5 million high school students in Illinois, 750 are selected to come together and form a state that is unlike any other. By using their unique ideas and beliefs, they shape the program and their own state.
Campaigning for various political offices on the city, county and state levels begins after the Saturday evening assembly.
Candidates are required to follow real-world election regulations which include campaign spending and campaigning time limitations. Activities include legislative sessions, court proceedings, law-enforcement presentations, assemblies and seminars.
Two delegates from Illinois Boys State are chosen each year to represent the high school students in Illinois as delegates to the American Legion Boys Nation.
At Boys Nation, each delegate represents his state as a senator in the structure of a mock Senate, which follows the rules and procedures of the United States Senate. Delegates meet with their state’s senators and are welcomed to the White House by the President.
Supervised recreation is an important part of the Boys State experience – to encourage teamwork, partnership and friendship. Organized athletic competition is held in basketball, soccer, softball and volleyball. A variety of additional recreational facilities are available at Eastern. A Boys State band plays a concert each evening. Participants bring their own instruments, but Boys State provides sousaphones and drums.
